Considering amenities, transportation and work opportunities, Seoul can be the best city to live alone in Korea. However, there are several disadvantages too. One of the prominent disadvantages is the cost of living. According to Mercers 2024 Cost of Living Ranking, Seoul is ranked 32nd globally. This metric is concerning because none of other Korean cities were able to make up to top 100. The major contributor is rent. The average rent is US$900 a month for one bedroom apartment in the city center in Seoul. This number outpaces US$400 a month required to rent same sized flat in Busan which is the second largest city in Korea and US$700 for Gyeonggi province which is the hour-long distance from central Seoul. Therefore, many Koreans do not even dare to buy apartment in Korea, and it is regarded as one of Koreans bucket lists. The reason for high rent is high level of urban concentration because of excessive number of crucial amenities being in Seoul such as educational institutions.
