It is complicated how Koreans perceive political discussion. Many people find discussing politics as a taboo. Political discussion always turns very controversial and offensive. Also, I saw many cases where peoples aptitude and personality are characterized by political comments they made. After the martial law announcement, Gong Yoo was criticized for the comment he made 5 years ago by praising the military regime. Interestingly on the other hand people blame it when others are too insensitive and ignorant about politics. Cha Eun Woo was criticized after posting the advertisement on Instagram by blaming his apathy in politics. This trend might show how polarized Korean society is. On the top of that Korea society can be defined as collectivism. We are the people who always need to choose sides and do not cherish individual ideas. Since many people choose either left or right in politics and attack opponents, many cannot easily reveal their thoughts which is the basis of democracy.
Thank you once again for this Aciel! Politics is indeed a sensitive topic in most countries, especially in Korea.
