In some countries, one’s social position can be guessed based on their last name. This is possible because the last name is directly linked to the historical origin or indicates the autocratic origin. Sometimes, rare names indicate the high-ranking position such as in Japan. However, in Korea it is extremely challenging to guess someone’s social status from the last name. The reason is that most people share similar last names, which are Park, Lee and Kim. Therefore, we usually investigate the family clans and ancestors when guessing the social status. The family clan is decided upon the location of where the clan originated. If the family clan has a long history with prestige line-up of the ancestors, we regard the person as having high social status. For example, there are over 20 family clans of Yoon. The most prestigious clan is Papyeong clan originating from Paju, Gyeonggi province. This clan is known for producing many queens during Chosun Dynasty and various ministers recently.
