I believe using gestures is really beneficial to understand others in many ways.
Technically, we say it is body languages. Especially, when we talk with foreigners, using gestures and facial expressions would be helpful, because we get to know their feelings and expressions with verbal communications.
That's why I study English by a telephone with Power English. In the past, I used to study by Skipe, and it was quite useful to understand English with both teacher and me. However, as time went by, I realized that in order to improve my English skills, I just have to study it without any using gestures and just listening to the voice. It is quite challenging for me.
