Sympathy is the feeling that you care about or are sorry about others’ misfortune, grief, or troubles. On the other hand, empathy is the feeling that you understand or share others’ situations. Therefore, sympathy is the combined feeling of emotional reactions and empathy(understanding). If you respond to others’ misfortune after understanding their situations, you can say that you have sympathy for them.

In my opinion, empathy is stronger than sympathy. It goes beyond having sympathy for their loss.
It is the capacity to put yourself in another person's shoes and comprehend another person's feelings through identifying with them.
