The reason the US has an interest in 'Chip 4' and is pressuring South Korea to join is that they want to protect their hegemony against China.
In the past, China was just a manufacturing base for producing a lot of products, because they didn't have enough technology.
But the situation changed a lot nowadays.
China is developing its own technology to copy other countries' technology.
China is even extracting political privacy information through technology.
One of the examples appeared 3 years ago.
Huawei, one of the leading IT companies got confidential information from the US through the people who had used their smartphones.
The noticeable thing is that 5G technology can be developed with semiconductor chips.
In other words, if China gets hegemony for semiconductors, it might cause negative effects on national power.
Consequently, the US is imposing the importance of an alliance to prevent the development of China's technology.
