South Korea is an export-oriented nation. Therefore, it could be highly impacted by external factors. There are two most significant reasons provided for stagflation. First is the rising energy and food cost from the Russian war on Ukraine. Since Korea cannot produce any fossil fuels locally, the rising number of natural gases from Russia. Therefore, South Korea lost one of its significant importers after the sanctions. Also, we cannot overlook food security concerns. Even though rice is the most prominent staple, seafood resources are imported from Russia. Also, many countries are coming up with a protectionist policies after the war. Indonesia has levied taxes on sunflower oil imports. Second is the supply chain concern of COVID-19. Many Korean companies rely on essential components from China. However, COVID zero policy has delayed such imports and the export timeline. Since those delays have shot up company costs, many small-and-medium-sized companies have bankrupted lately.
