I think these practice is a kind of greeting for Koreans like "did you eat meals". In other words, it is expression of interest to the partner. Some people, especially, women would like to confirm their partner's love by asking frequently through messages or phone call. I don't know why we have these habits, but we don't think it's weird thing. It actually depends on the generations, old generations even don't know how to send text messages, whereas young people prefer to use messages rather than phone calls. There is difference between men and women, women usually send more text messages than men and want to keep in touch frequently. As a men, I don't like spending time to send messages but it is one of the characteristics on Korean, I would admit it one of our culture.
